Q: Is there a name for it?

The official Latin name for this algae is Gloeocapsa Magma.

Q: How did it get on my roof?

Good question. The algae is airborne. It did not come from the trees. It may seem to be more common in wooded areas, but that is due to the trees providing shade to the roof which creates an environment for algae growth.

Q: Why is it only on one side of my roof?

The algae grows mainly on the darker, more moist, northern exposure of a roof.

It thrives in shady, wet areas. Outdoor hikers and mountain climbers know that they can determine ‘North' without a compass by looking for the side of the tree with algae and lichen growing.

Q: How come my roof has stains and my neighbor's doesn't?

The algae needs the right conditions to take hold and grow. Shade, moisture and even the age of the shingles themselves determine its germination and growth potential.

Q: Will it die off in the winter?

No. Cold weather won't harm it. In fact it tends to grow more in the winter months because of the decreased daylight and increased moisture from snow and winter rains.

Q: Can I remove it myself with a store bought roof cleaner?

There are some liquid cleaners available on-line or in stores that claim to clean roof stains.

We've tried them all and they simply don't work. Plus you need to climb up on the roof to apply them. That is extremely dangerous on a dry roof. Picture how slippery the roof is when it's wet ! And you can cause damage to your roof shingles by not knowing how to walk on them correctly. Roof cleaning is a job best left to a professional.

Q: Do I need to remove the stains?

Yes, you should. The algae colony will eventually cover your entire roof. It blocks the reflective roof granules and the ability of the roof to ‘breathe' causing excessive heat build up and higher energy costs. The algae actually ‘eats' the organic asphalt in the shingles causing premature aging of your roof.

The average roof replacement cost can be $5000 to $10,000 or more. Keeping your roof clean is an inexpensive way to avoid premature shingle decay and get the full life out of your roof shingles.
